Ann Cutler, MD, FAAP, is a developmental pediatrician who has worked in the Chicago community for over 24 years. She graduated from Wayne State Medical School and then completed her pediatric residency at Michael Reese Medical Center in Chicago as well as a fellowship in developmental disabilities at the Harvard Medical Center Boston Children's Hospital. She is board certified in both general pediatrics and neurodevelopmental pediatrics. For the past 15 years, Dr. Cutler has been at the University of Illinois at Chicago Institute on Disability and Human Development where she serves as coordinator of the Zero through Three Developmental Diagnostic Program and is active in clinical work and training and is the director of Illinois LEND.
Dr. Cutler has participated in a number of advocacy efforts in this state. . From 1996-2002 she served as an agency-and, later a parent-representative, on the Illinois Interagency Council on Early Intervention (Dr. Cutler is the parent of 3 children, one of whom is on the autism spectrum). On that council, Dr. Cutler also served as co-chair of the Children At- Risk Committee and chair of the Parent Committee. Subsequently, Dr. Cutler was a co-principal investigator of the Unmet Needs Project, an advocacy and research initiative that focused on the needs of children in Illinois with and at risk for disabilities. The data obtained from this project has been extensively used to advocate improved mental health services in this state. This project's documentation of developmental screening practices in Illinois served as a catalyst for the funding of the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (ICAAP) Screening Tools and Education for Providers (STEPPs) programs that were developed by ICAAP to assist pediatricians in this state with developmental screening. Dr. Cutler was the chair for the ICAAP committee that developed the curriculum for STEPPs 2: Early Autism Detection and Referral. That training program has received national recognition and Dr. Cutler was honored for this work by being named a Fellow in the News by the AAP in 2005.
In addition to her work with children with disabilities, Dr. Cutler has a strong interest in promoting the social-emotional development of all children, especially children living in poverty. She has served on numerous advisory and advocacy committees in Illinois regarding mental health issues.
