Disability Studies
Past/current experiences working in the field of disabilities:
I began working with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities as a volunteer at a summer camp when I was 14. I continued this work by acting as a direct support professional at a community agency throughout college. It was at this point I discovered my interest in research and data analysis, and set about finding a way to combine these two interests, which I found in the Master’s Program in disability studies at UIC.
Goals for your LEND training experience:
During my LEND training experience, I hope to experience as many varied opportunities in the disability field as possible. In my work, I am often far removed from the community and clinical experiences many other disciplines are exposed to, so the LEND program allows me to gain on-the-ground experience I would not otherwise have.
What you wish to contribute, in the future, as a professional/family member in the field:
I hope to pursue a career in research, but want to be sure that whatever research I’m doing will be impactful for people with disabilities and the professionals who work with them. In the research field, it is easy to become removed from these populations and operate in an “ivory tower”, so I plan to continue participating in as many community opportunities as possible to ensure that I continue to contribute to a body of research that is timely and relevant.
