Bio
Katie Arnold is the Director of Community Education in the Institute on Disability
and Human Development (IDHD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Illinois’
University Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. After graduating
from the University of Chicago in 2001 with honors in Sociology, Katie lived in
L'arche Chicago. L'Arche is a community, based on mutual relationships, where
people with and without developmental disabilities live together. She received
her Master of Science in Disability and Human Development at the University of
Illinois at Chicago. Katie received the 2009 UIC Humanitarian of the Year award
for her dedication to the advancement of human rights of people with disabilities.
Katie has been influenced by her experience growing up with a younger sister
with a developmental disability.
Research Interest
Katie anchors her work in the experiences and relationships she has with people
with disabilities. In her current role at IDHD, Katie provides education, training,
and resources on various topics which include self-directed supports, direct
support workforce development, supporting healthy relationships and sexuality,
and the sibling experience. Katie is the Chair of the national Sibling Leadership
Network and Vice President of Supporting Illinois Brothers and Sisters. She
serves on the Board of the Arc of Illinois as well as AUCD’s National Community
Education Directors Council.
