Research Interests
Patricia Politano is a speech-language pathologist with over 20 years experience in assistive technology and augmentative communication (AAC). She is currently the coordinator for AAC services at UIC's, Assistive Technology Unit and teaches graduate level courses in assistive technology and AAC. Pat is the author of the Inventory of Functional Communication and has presented nationally and internationally on issues related to assessment and maximizing use of AAC systems. Research interests include participatory research in AAC; social and strategic domains of communicative competence; and outcome measurement. Current research includes collaboration with people who use AAC, to identify personal and environmental factors in successful interactions with non-disabled communication partners. In addition, Pat is very active in the national and international organizations for AAC with interests in the pre-service professional preparation, professional development of AAC service providers and the promotion of AAC in developing countries.
